Message from the Executive Director
Hi, I’m David Horton, Executive Director for Winston-Salem Industries for the Blind,
where we are proud to say Our Vision is Working. IFB provides employment, training, and services to people who are blind or
visually impaired at our two North Carolina locations (Winston-Salem and Asheville), as well as our new
location in Little Rock, Arkansas. We also own and operate dozens of entities across the country and abroad.
Our long history of making high-quality products on-time and on-budget began nearly 80 years ago in 1936.
Today, this history has carried us to major partnerships with a diverse list of customers, including the U.S.
government and military. Around the globe, servicemen and women use our products every day. And here at home,
IFB provides optical services to our nation’s veterans.
We are a multi-million dollar operation fulfilling contracts that are vital to our nation’s government,
but we are also a promise—a promise to improve the quality of life for people who are blind or visually impaired.
That is our mission and we never forget it. We hold a truly extraordinary position in the marketplace as the nation’s
largest employer of the blind and visually impaired. We are committed to expanding our business so that we can provide
more jobs to men and women who would likely be unemployed.
In doing so, we transform lives. We give people the confidence and independence to contribute to society and
fulfill personal dreams of having a job. Every day at IFB, people who are blind and visually impaired come to work
with skill, dedication and commitment to be outstanding employees. We value them tremendously. They give us their best.
Yes, Our Vision is Working and the proof is in the numbers; year after year, we achieve job growth by increasing sales.
But the real success of IFB always shines brightest in the lives of those who work here. Our employees are inspiring individuals
who are so grateful for an opportunity to work and who, frankly, inspire me every day.
At IFB, we are a team that constantly strives for excellence. It should be no surprise that we achieve this because of our
excellent members: our employees, our Board of Directors, our customers, and our supporters in the community. We thank them all
for their commitment. And we thank you for taking the time to learn more about who we are, what we do, and why we do it.
